Communication with patients in the case of same-day surgery is extremely important and plays a key role. A patient undergoing a same-day surgical procedure must be very well informed about what operation they will have, why it is being performed, what difficulties they may experience afterward, what they will be able to do after the surgery, and what they will not be able to do. A patient who receives this information, understands how they will feel post-surgery, knows what to expect, and manages it very well. Conversely, a patient who knows nothing will wake up in pain and be uncertain about whether it is right or wrong, whether it is normal or not. This psychological preparation of patients is indeed crucial and should not be underestimated.
Every patient leaving our inpatient facility receives an “itinerary” that includes all the information regarding their recovery process. This means they will learn that for the first 1-2 days, they will experience certain levels of pain and will be able to eat specific foods. They will also be informed about what difficulties to expect, when and how they can gradually start increasing their activity levels. For example, patients who have undergone hernia surgery often ask when they can return to their normal lifestyle, when they can engage in sports, and when they can resume strength training. All of this information is provided in writing so that they are well-informed. Additionally, we have a 24-hour phone line that patients can call anytime if they have questions or concerns about their postoperative recovery.
