Recommendations for Patients Before and After Surgery
Dear Madam, Dear Sir,
Thank you for the trust you have placed in our healthcare facility. A specialist physician has recommended a surgical procedure for you, which will be performed with the participation of an anesthesiologist. The surgery will take place during a short-term hospitalization, the length of which will be determined by the attending physician based on the nature of the surgery and the postoperative course.
For a smooth surgical and postoperative course, we kindly ask you to follow these recommendations:
On the day of surgery, please arrive at our clinic at the time specified by your doctor.
If, for serious reasons, you are unable to arrive for admission, please notify us immediately by phone at the reception desk, phone numbers: 272 916 680, 272 916 682, during office hours (Mon-Thurs 7:15 AM – 4:00 PM, Fri 7:15 AM – 1:00 PM).
If you experience any acute issues before the surgery (e.g. diarrhea, cold, cold sores, allergies, etc.), please inform us immediately at the reception.
It is necessary to complete the preoperative examination at least 5 days before the scheduled procedure, therefore…
Visit your general practitioner (or internist) with the attached referral 3 weeks before the surgery.
BEFORE THE SURGERY
- On the day of surgery admission, please bring the following:
- Results of the preoperative examination
- Completed anesthesia questionnaire
- Signed informed consent for the surgery
- Informed consent for anesthesia
- Health insurance card along with another form of identification
- Slippers, nightwear, basic hygiene items, and any medications you regularly take
- You may have your last light meal no later than 6 hours before the scheduled time of admission
- Non-irritating non-alcoholic fluids (water, non-carbonated mineral water, weak tea, etc.) can be consumed up to 3 hours before the scheduled time of admission
For example: if your admission is at 7:30 AM, your last meal should be no later than midnight the night before. The last fluids can be consumed by 4:30 AM. Take your regular morning medications with a small sip of water at 6:00 AM. Do not smoke or chew anything starting from midnight before the surgery.
- If you are taking medications that prolong blood clotting time (such as Anopyrin, Godasal, Stacyl, Warfarin, Trombex, Ticlopidin, Apo-Tic, Clopidogrel, Xarelto, Pradaxa, Eliquis, etc.) on a long-term basis, it will be necessary to discontinue them 5-10 days before the surgery after consulting with your general practitioner. Instead of some of these medications (especially Warfarin), injections of LMWH (Fraxiparine, Clexane, Zibor, etc.) may need to be administered. The duration of discontinuation before the surgery and any potential substitution with injections will be determined by your general practitioner (internist, cardiologist). Do not administer these injections on the day of surgery!
- 2 to 3 days before the surgery, please shave the surgical area – see the diagram in the “Informed Consent for Surgery.”
- The day before the surgery, consume only easily digestible food and drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.
- On the day of the surgery, take a shower and check that your navel is clean. You must arrive for the procedure without makeup, jewelry, rings, piercings, with 1-2 nails free of artificial nails or any decorations on them (due to the need to measure oxygen saturation from the finger).
- Women, if necessary, consult with your doctor regarding hygiene products, including tampons.
In the week before the scheduled date of surgery, we will contact you via SMS (or possibly by phone) from the number 227 020 126, and we kindly ask you to confirm the appointment either by sending an SMS to the number 775 117 393 or by calling 227 020 126.
If you do not do so, this appointment will be offered to patients on the waiting list.
AFTER THE SURGERY
- The patient must not leave the bed for the first 6 hours after the surgery without the knowledge and assistance of the nursing staff (unless otherwise determined by the nursing staff).
- The patient must not go home alone without accompaniment on the day of the surgery or the following day.
- The patient must not drive motor vehicles for 24 hours after anesthesia.
- Please arrange for the accompaniment of an adult and transportation to your home care!!!
- After discharge, you must be in the company of an adult for at least 24 hours.
- For at least 36 hours after the procedure: stay at home, rest, do not operate electrical devices, avoid tasks requiring increased attention—especially work at heights or underground, do not make significant decisions, do not sign legal documents, do not consume alcoholic beverages, eat only light meals (or follow the dietary recommendations you received), and drink plenty of fluids.
- For minor patients, the parents will oversee the adherence to the previous points.
- It is common to feel increased fatigue for approximately one week after the surgery, and there may also be a decreased tolerance for alcoholic beverages.
- In the short period following the procedure, you may experience difficulties related to the surgery and anesthesia, such as throat irritation, muscle aches, dizziness upon standing, headaches, increased emotional lability, etc. These are considered a normal part of the postoperative course.
In case of any difficulties, please call 227 020 126 on weekdays and 775 117 393 on weekends and holidays.
